The company offers basic and applied research services primarily in the field of genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and other omics research studies, which would have implications on healthcare, breeding, bio-energy, and other areas; and life sciences technology solutions to researchers for biological, agricultural, and medical research. It also develops advanced genetic testing techniques for various diseases, such as Down's syndrome and other chromosomal disorders, monogenic disorder, hereditary deafness, thalassemia, newborn genetic metabolic diseases, leukemia, cervical cancer, and hepatitis, as well as genetic testing and diagnostic technology system covering life cycle; operates a biotechnological breeding platform and applying scientific and technology to improve food production; and produces cultivars based on advancedomics technologies. In addition, the company operates a college to foster interdisciplinary scientific research, and provides education resources and train talents in bioscience and bioindustry; engages in development, production, and sales of in-vitro diagnostic reagents, medical devices, research reagents, and equipment; operates a genebank that collects, preserves, and exploits genomics resources; offers an informatics and data management software that enables researcher receive accurate genomic data for sequencing projects; and publishes a data journal containing articles of various biological studies. BGI was formerly known as Beijing Genomics Institute. The company was founded in 1999 and is based in Shenzhen, China. It has branch offices in Europe, the Americas, the Asia- Pacific, as well as in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, China; and business centers in Europe, America, and the Asia-Pacific. The company also has lab facilities in Hong Kong; Wuhan, China; and Sacramento, California.
