Australia Post might sell iconic general post office properties

Australia Post, the nation’s largest and oldest mail service, is planning to sell its iconic general post office buildings in several key cities to cut losses and raise cash, according to media reports. The New Daily reported that leaked investment documents showed the company is seeking to sell GPO buildings in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Hobart and Canberra. Most of these properties were built in the late 1800s. The historic GPO in Melbourne’s Bourke Street was built in 1859 and has been leased out to retailer H&M. Sydney’s GPO on Martin Place was built in 1866, and currently houses a Westin Hotel. It was leased for 80 years to the Far East Organisation and Sino Group.
